With some time off, I decided to scope out Lake Wenatchee for a few days. This location is situated in the Stevens Pass area and close to the quaint town of Leavenworth. I left after sun down on Tuesday night and planned to arrive at the Lake Wenatchee State Park to camp. It was a dark drive but the conditions of the pass were warm and clear, so passing up a trip over the mountains would be uncalled for. After a calming drive up the pass, I didn't even realize the snow banks along the side of the road. Because of my fear of driving in the snow, it was a good thing it was hidden in the shadows for most of the way. We arrived at the park, which is actually a snow park in the Winter. People can ski, snow mobile, and snow shoe through the acres of forested land. I am about to buy myself a pair of snow shoes so I can truly indulge in the winter wonderland.
Upon waking in the snow, I was pleasantly surprised that I found a spot right on the lake! The views and scenery were exactly what I was hoping for. After a walk around the snowy lake, We headed back to the car to make a hearty spaghetti breakfast. While we were gathering the supplies for the meal, the tomato sauce slipped and shattered on the ground, and our hopes for a camp made meal were gone. We didn't care though because we thought a hearty breakfast in Leavenworth had the same amount of appeal. We stopped by Sandy's waffle house to munch on waffles, German sausage, cinnamon rolls, and other breakfast delicacies. We then found a 2 mile hike to Hidden Lake on Lake Wenatchee. The weather was good and the drive was mostly snow free. We then hit a bit more snow and decided to reverse. Unfortunately, when we reversed, we backed into some deeper snow. We kind of got stuck and started to try everything we could to get the car to move. We put towels under the wheels, dug out snow, and even tried to push. After an hour of trying, we decided to walk back into cell service and call AAA. AAA came within an hour and started to help us. The man was frustrated and upset to help us and then eventually pulled us up onto a snow bank and then left us...in a worst position! We walked back into service and came across a home with a snow plow in the driveway. We knocked and asked for help and they assisted us as much as they could. They lent us shovels which allowed my friend to dig as much snow out as possible while I called for another tow truck at the ladies home. I cannot explain how close I felt to these homeowners and they even offered us their spare bedroom if worst came to worst.
I eventually got a hold of a man with a tractor plow to pull us out. With it already being dark, I started to get scared. Luckily the company I was with was calm and had a skill for problem solving. When I got back to the trail head, my friend had pretty much shoveled out the whole snow bank, I was beginning to regain lots of hope! I took my turn with the shovel and was hoping we wouldn't even need the tow anymore. But faster than I expected, the tractor came roaring down the road! He hooked my car up, told me to put the car in reverse and give it some juice while he pulled. My back end of my car immediately crashed into his plow. I got out of the car scared to look at my back end, it was totaled. I stood in shock for a few minutes and then we continued to pull the car out. This was probably one of the most odd moments of my life where things just kept getting worst. After 5 hours of this problem, I was completely not capable of driving home to Seattle. I found a nice hotel in Leavenworth called The Icicle Village resort, where the manager gave me the best discount. The lodge had the cutest appeal and even gave my dog, Mac, a welcome goodie bag. He instantly fell in love with his squeaky toy and treats-especially after our long day. We made some microwaved lasagna in the room and checked out the spa and pool. It was exactly what I needed. We woke up to one of the best breakfasts ever-potatoes, eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy, waffles, oatmeal, nutella, and pastries were all at our fingertips. It was the perfect way to end the trip, and we had some unexpected quality time in the German themed city of Leavenworth. I am not upset with what happened to my car because of all the people that helped me through it. As unfortunate as it was, I was able to grow so strong with the people around me, and that is one of the most important things to have in life even through the most unpredictable and unfortunate things.
